Couchism (part II)

In the beginning, God created the earth, and He looked upon it in His cosmic loneliness.
And God said, "Let Us make living creatures out of mud, so the mud can see what We have done." And God created every living creature that now moveth, and one was man. Mud as man alone could speak. God leaned close as mud as man sat up, looked around, and spoke. Man blinked. "What is the pupose of all this?" he asked politely.
"Everything must have a purpose?" asked God.
"Certainly." said man.
"Then I leave it to you to think of one for all this," said God
And He went away.
~"The Books Of Bokonon: The First Book" page one.

and so begins the next piece of the puzzle.
According to the bible, God gave man 4 gifts. Life, Choice, Mate, and Savior. Christianity believes that Jesus Christ as a Savior was the greatest gift of God (aside from life, which without all other gifts are meaningless). Couchism believes that Choice is the greatest gift. God gave man "Freedom of Choice", and to keep it in check, He upheld "Consequence of Choice". Christians and Couchist both agree that God is three things. God is Eternal, Holy (or Pure in some religions), and Just. Couchists believe that a Just God cannot interfere with Consequence of Choice. And thereby will not help one in there times of need, as it is the consequences of peoples choice the put people in difficult positions. God does not intervene under any circumstance. Some examples.
1. A woman who has an abortion has to hold herself accountable in her own mind.
2. Having sex outside of a marriage or other forms of sexual promesquity leads to high risks of unplaned pregnancy and the spread of std's.
3. Killing someone results in possibly getting caught and going to jail. etc.
Now this is not to say that God doesnt have morals. The Ten Commandments and The Two Greatest Commandments are definately a good guide to go by. As by leading a good life one is likely to have less consequences to face on the average.
However personal morality has little to do with getting into heaven. The only way a Couchist can get to heaven is by accepting Jesus Christ as a personal Savior. Couchist look at it as kind of a legal loophole in the system. Couchists do not believe this was an act of interviening on God's part as all it did was give people another choice they could make. Basically Couchists believe that God created a system that either intentionally or by accident (can't know what Gods thinking is) didnt have a rewarding afterlife. no hell, no heaven, just a limbo called purgatory (also refered to as Abraham's bossom). And until the whole Christ fiasco, that was your only choice. both good and bad people resided in the same place. After Christ sacrificed Himself for everyones sins, God (in his all-knowing wisdom) decided where everyone who was sitting in limbo should go. We dont know what He used for criterea for all the souls who died before Christ, but Couchism believes it to have been a moral code.
Christians and Couchists (and pretty much everyone else) believe that Hell is a prison (and not a very nice one at that). Couchists however also believe that Heaven is a prison of sorts. Couchists believe that once in Heaven, one loses all freedom of choice and becomes one with God. All though this is considerably more pleasant an option then Hell, its still a prison. Couchist believe that Purgatory was the last time there was any sort of freedom in the afterlife, and are constantly trying to reach that place. Though no way has been found it is the only even semi purpose of life to a Couchist (and its considered pretty much a lost cause).
Couchists believe that there is no purpose to life. There is no fate or destiny and really no hope as it is impossible to control all the choices made by everyone. And if it was possible then life would not be worth living. Couchists figure that God being so much more intelligent then humans would come right out and tell them if there was a purpose to life. As humans have little hope of trying to understand God.
